“The fascination with glass? – It is one of the oldest
materials mankind understood to shape. Imagine: You
melt some sand and look at the result.”
- Ted Muehling
The technique of melting quartz sand and forming permanent cultural objects from it dates back to the fourth millennium BC. Glass has always fascinated us. With its transparency, unique shine, and interplay with light and reflection, it has properties that are otherwise only found in diamond and rock crystal.
Lobmeyr has been driven by this fascination with glass for almost two hundred years. A sixth-generation glassware company established in 1823, which gained early prominence for co-designing the world’s first electric chandelier with Thomas Edison in 1883 for Vienna’s Imperial Palace. Today the label is still based in Vienna and continues exploring the founder’s fascination with crystal glass, using both age-old and modern techniques to experiment with the medium’s endless forms and possibilities. With heavy focus on both innovation and tradition, Lobmeyr works alongside contemporary and classic artists, architects and designers, creating a sense of diversity that’s reflected in its tableware offering.
