Tenugui Towel

A small printed tea towel with a unique story!

WHY WE LOVE IT

Each towel is finished with artwork from a Japanese national treasure, a picture scroll handed down in Kozan-ji Temple, Kyoto. The original consists of four scrolls, A, B, C and D. A and B are said to have been produced in the late Heian period and C and D in the Kamakura period. The emaki is 44 meters long, and the white drawings with ink lines are playful and representative of the world-famous caricatures. It is also considered the oldest [manga] in Japan. The artist is said to be Kakuyu, a Toba Buddhist priest, but there is no proof.
